What does “somatic” mean?

My doctorate is in Somatic Education. I am often asked what “somatic” means.

Soma comes from the Greek word for body. The role and power of the body and its owner is often ignored in conventional therapy. The somatic therapist, on the other hand, combines his/her knowledge of how the body works with the client’s sensate experience to devise a strategy for change and for healing. To facilitate change, the somatic therapist works with your specific body issues as you feel them.

The goal is to connect with the wisdom and support of the somatic self in the healing process encompassing hands-on therapy, therapeutic exercise and your own life-style program.
